Office Software

Section dedicated to the pieces of software to do the most mundane "office tasks" with your Computer.

Office Suites and Publications:

Suggested Name Description Windows Linux
OpenOffice The famous office suite, now proprietary but still free to use.
LibreOffice The Office Suite derived by the split of the OpenOffice team after the acquisition from Oracle. Fast and Stable, it has a plugin system for maximum flexibility.
Scribus A software that allows you to paginate brochures, papers and books in a easy and quick way, with professional-looking results. It has all the features of the more famous Publisher and QuarkXpress, but for free. Can be extended with plugins and Python scripts.

PDF Viewers

Suggested Name Description Windows Linux
Adobe Reader The most famous PDF reader out there, and being the most famous and having lots of features it's often targetted by malicious exploits. Sometimes it's really slow.
Sumatra PDF Really light and fast reader, reads PDF, EPub, XPS and digital Comics (CBZ, CBR) and CHM files too. Very few functionalities provided. Dedicated to the people who don't feel the necessity of a reader which can brew coffee, among other features.
Okular KDE/Plasma's PDF Reader, great and fast, reads different formats like CBZ and CBR, besides the classic PDF Files.
Foxit Reader Presents itself as the "Best PDF Reader", and it actually gives a whole lot of features (maybe too many) in a piece of software that doesn't take that much space or memory, can be extended via plugins to support more formats.
Zathura A super-minimal PDF reader for Linux, great on lightweight systems. Supports more formats via Plugins. Sadly I can't seem to be able to make PDF Forms work.
QPDFView Another really lightweight PDF reader, this time with (even though it's rudimentary) PDF form support, needs a try.

PDF Creation

Suggested Name Description Windows Linux
PDFcreator This Open Source Software creates a fake printer that is able to "print" PDF files from any software, allows also to join PDF files and other interesting features. Be careful when asked if you want to install additional programs.
DoPDF Like PDFCreator, creates a fake printer that "bakes" PDFs, maybe it's a bit heavier than PDFCreator.
LaTeX LaTeX (Pronounced: Latek) isn't a real true "PDF Creator", but a bit more like a "programming language". Instead of following the WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get - typically graphical) line of thought, it looks at the WYSIWYM (What you see is what you mean) school, and allows to create complex publications after going over its really steep learning curve.
Print On File Not a real program, as much as a feature some software offers: printing directly on a PDF File.
